Meet the farmers
Thelma and John
Thelma was born and educated in the Irish Republic graduating from Trinity College Dublin. She spent time in both
France and Germany in the long University vacations. After some years teaching in Ireland she went to Zimbabwe
where she taught for three years before moving to New Zealand and meeting John.
John was born in New Zealand and served his time as a carpenter.
He travelled to Europe and after working for some time in London established a Youth Hostel in Campello, Spain.
In 1960 he returned to New Zealand to establish a building company and become involved in Local Government.
Thelma and John met and planned to establish an organic orchard based on land that John's father had left him.
This they did and so came about Pottsbury Farm.
This is evolving all the time but the essence is to look after the soil and the myriad of birds, worms, insects that live here
and not to apply anything that would alter the balance of good bacteria, fungi with the overall aim of producing healthy food.
